Our History
Our story begins in the late eighteenth century. The Town of Dublin officially dates to the year 1771 when a charter was granted for the town by King George III.
After nearly fifty years during which the Dublin church and town government were intermeshed, the passage of the New Hampshire Act of Toleration forced the separation of church and state. As a result, the First Congregational Society was formed in 1820. A few years later, the Trinitarians withdrew from the group and formed the Trinitarian Congregational Society.
Although the two societies maintained their separate identities for more than a century, there were attempts to join forces and unite as a Dublin Community Church. Finally, in 1952, the Trinitarians officially separated themselves again, leaving the other society to formally incorporate in 1954 as “The Dublin Community Church, also known as First Congregational Society of Dublin.”
Since 1954, the Dublin Community Church has welcomed all people, regardless of religious background. Initially, the DCC’s affiliation was with the Unitarian Universalist Association and later, in 1971, the church joined the New Hampshire Conference of the United Church of Christ. Although through the years the ministers of the DCC have been Unitarian, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, and U.C.C., the Dublin Community Church is now in covenant with the U.C.C., among the most ecumenical of denominations, and so remains true to its inclusive history. |
